Elephant (Animals)

The African elephant, which can reach 7 tons, is the largest terrestrial animal today, but it is far behind the Blue Whale, which can weigh nearly 200 tons and exceed 30 meters long. The elephant walks on the tips of the fingers his toes are inserted in the foot, there are between 2 and 5, we see only the nails. However one can see between three and five nails according to the feet. The fore feet have a rounded shape, while the hind feet have an oval shape. The feet are composed of adipose tissue that act as shock absorbers. It is impossible for an elephant to jump, for biomechanical reasons: it always needs one foot on the ground. However it can run at a maximum speed of 20 km / h (record 24 km / h). Although the term "run" is used for an elephant, it should be noted that the term is inappropriate. It would be more logical to say that he is "walking fast". Indeed, it does not change its pace (the way it moves) when it accelerates. The color of the skin of an elephant is greyish; however, its apparent color is related to the soil on which the elephant moves. It can also be due to mud baths that it takes pleasure to take when it is hot. In the current state of knowledge, the elephant is, along with the human, the dolphin, the raven and certain species of great apes, one of the few animal species to pass the Gallup mirror test: when from an elephant's forehead to a point which he can not see directly and a mirror is presented to him, he passes his trunk on the spot; demonstrating that he has recognized his image and therefore he is aware of himself.
