A liner is a vessel specialized in the transport of passengers on the high seas. The term results from the Frenchization of the English packet boat, designating ships carrying mail. The first big ships appeared in the early nineteenth century when international migration was strong. Numerous technical innovations, such as the steam engine and steel hulls, have allowed ships to gain size and speed and have given rise to competitions between powers, particularly between the United Kingdom and Germany. After two golden ages, at the turn of the two centuries, then in the inter-war period, the liner's reign faded to make room for the plane.
