A musician is a person who plays or composes music. In living music, one can start from the opposition between the performing musician (singer or instrumentalist) and the listener of music, whose role is obviously more effaced. However, when everyone is both a performer and listener (for example, members of a religious community singing hymns) this distinction becomes inoperative. A second opposition is added to the previous one and concerns only the musicians: it is about the distinction between, on the one hand the composer, who "thinks" and "writes" the music (for the types of music having a system of notation), on the other hand the interpreter, who executes this one with according to the cases, a more or less great part of personal invention and improvisation. Some famous musicians, performers (individuals or groups) or composers have left traces in history that justify a separate biographical study of the musical stream to which they belong.
