Piracy refers to a form of banditry practiced on the sea by sailors called pirates. However, pirates are not only limited to ship looting, and sometimes attack small coastal towns. The word "pirate" comes from the Latin pirata that is to say "brigand, bandit who runs the seas to attack ships". In the Middle Ages, the meaning of the term "pirate" is narrowed down to specifically refer to bandits who roam the seas to loot merchant ships.
