They are semi-arboreal, terrestrial or marine reptiles, vegetarians although they eat flies and flying insects. Terrestrial iguanas can stay up to several hours without moving. They stand alone or with others. These are mainly diurnal animals. Their scaly skin is of a color allowing them more or less to blend in with the landscape and thus escape their predators. The iguana has a third eye on the head at the back. It takes on the appearance of a small, full, greyish, eyelid-free eye; hence the delicacy to observe when handling near this area. The pineal eye does not confer normal vision but gives the iguana the possibility, without having to lift the neck and thus expose its vulnerable anatomical regions, to be informed of possible attacks of predators as well as the intensity of the light rays.
